About

see how I work

"'Travel Global, Live Local' isn't just a tagline — it's a belief I've built an entire business around. I don't think a great trip should be about escaping into a bubble; I think it should pull you closer to the place you're in — its people, its food, its history, its rhythms. That's the kind of travel that changes you, and it's the only kind I want to sell.

In practice, that means three things guide every itinerary I build: genuine connection over staged experiences, real respect for the ecosystems we're lucky enough to visit, and a commitment to keeping your travel dollars in the communities you're visiting, not sending them back to a corporate office overseas. That's not a marketing checkbox for me — it's simply how I believe this work should be done, trip after trip."

My Mission

WORK WITH ME

they came from 20+ years leading fundraising and strategy teams at international nonprofits, where I helped build entirely new lines of business, sustained the operations that kept critical programs running, and drove the strategic thinking that helped organizations grow into new opportunities. At the core of that work — and now this one — are the same three skills: connecting ideas and people, strategic thinking, and creative problem-solving. That's exactly what it takes to build a trip that fits you perfectly and execute it flawlessly, not just book one that looks good on paper.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, with conversational Isi-Zulu — because real connection starts with being able to actually talk to the people you meet.

But the skills I bring to your itinerary didn't come only from travel —

My last name, Lane, comes from a long line of traveling merchants in England — turns out wanderlust runs in the family. Mine showed up early: at four years old, one ride at Disney World was enough to convince me the world was bigger than my Michigan hometown, and I've spent the decades since finding out exactly how big.

My curiosity for the world took me through study abroad programs across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium, and the Caribbean while at Michigan State University — and from there, into years actually living and working in Costa Rica and South Africa, not just visiting. Since then, I've traveled to 45+ countries, solo and alongside my husband Gilbert, always looking for what's real rather than what's on a postcard. For the past five years, that curiosity has had a second purpose: traveling specifically for Heather Lane Adventures, to personally vet the destinations my clients are heading to and build the kind of long-standing relationships with local guides, properties, and partners that don't come from a brochure.

Cape Town & the Cape Winelands — For My Husband's 50th We celebrated my husband's 50th birthday in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands — mountains, history, incredible food and wine, and a happy afternoon spent meeting local fashion designers. He told me before we'd even landed back home that he couldn't wait to go back.

Costa Rica — Showing My Step-Daughter the Country That Shaped Me I took my step-daughter to Costa Rica, the country I once called home, to share it with her firsthand — hot springs in Arenal, waterfall walks through the cloud forest, and a reunion with my "Costa Rican sisters," who still feel like family.

Sleeping Bear Dunes & Pictured Rocks — A Family Road Trip Some of my favorite trips are simple road trips through the small towns and hidden gems of the U.S. and Canada — always better paired with a national park. One family favorite: taking the kids to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, right in Michigan.

The Galápagos — An Adventure With My Sister I didn't know what to expect sailing to the Galápagos with my sister, but coming face to face — from a respectful distance — with wildlife found nowhere else on Earth changed me. So did the guides who called those islands home and shared them with us.

Kind Words

- Gail, 50th Anniversary Trip to Normandy & Munich

"Heather did an amazing job creating a trip of a lifetime for my husband and me, to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Her knowledge of partnerships for highly educational tours (e.g. of Normandy Beaches and Munich/Dachau) was exceptional. Her creativity of designing an itinerary that echoed my father's WWII service was remarkable. And her attention to every detail from selecting fabulous hotels to ensuring seamless travel and transfers was deeply appreciated by us, each and every day of our trip."

- Suzanne, Private Group Trip to Morocco

"Heather planned an incredible trip for my friends and me to Morocco. She thought of every detail and made it one of the best trips I've ever been on. She was easy to work with, adaptable, and always available during our trip to answer questions. She truly tailored the experience to our needs and made everything seamless. This was my first time working with Heather, and I'll definitely use her for all of my future trips. Highly recommend!"

— Randi, Family Trip to Madrid & Barcelona

"Heather planned the perfect family vacation for our family to Madrid and Barcelona. She met with us to understand what type of vacation we wanted, then provided us with several options for activities so we could build the perfect itinerary. Once we decided, she booked every detail (hotels, transfers, tours) — we just had to show up! She checked in with us throughout our vacation to make sure that we had everything we needed. I highly recommend Heather!"

— Jason, Custom Trip to Peru

"Heather planned a top-notch trip to Peru for us. She organized a perfect trip that allowed us to see and do everything we wanted, while still having downtime in beautiful hotels. Everything was seamless and the guides she selected were personable and knowledgeable. Great coordination, great communication, and she accommodated a last minute change to the itinerary that we wanted. We absolutely plan to use her for future trips."
